59 F ollowing a pair of 1-0 setbacks to Big Ten Conference newcomers Maryland and Rut- gers, University of Iowa head soccer coach Dave DiIanni is looking for the Hawkeyes to com- pete for a full 90 minutes. Two lulls in performance led to the Hawkeyes suf- fering their first Big Ten defeats of the 2014 season, dropping Iowa's record to 8-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in league play. "We need to put together 90 minutes of soccer," said DiIanni. "e Rutgers game was as close as we've come in a long time. We put 85 minutes to- gether against one of the top two or three teams in the conference, but we have to be a better team coming out in the second half. "at has been a consistent theme, and that starts with me adjusting something at halime. I don't know what it is, but we'll have to change something up." e Terrapins came out quickly Sept. 25 and capitalized with the game's only goal in the 17th-minute. ree days later, Iowa controlled the first half against 17th-ranked Rutgers before the Hawkeyes came out sluggish to start the second half, and it cost them. e Scarlet Knights fired five shots in the first five minutes before capitalizing at the 49:44 mark in what proved to the game-winner. With a roster decimated by injuries — nine play- ers were sidelined with various injuries against OCTOBER SCHEDULE Oct. 2 - at Michigan State Oct. 5 - at Michigan Oct. 8 - at Wisconsin Oct. 17 - Indiana (Senior Night) Oct. 19 - Purdue Oct. 24 - at Ohio State Oct. 26 - at Penn State Oct. 31 - at Nebraska Rutgers — forcing the Hawkeyes to dive deep into their bench. Senior Melanie Pickert says the entire roster needs to step up and come together to over- come the adversity. "A lot of players on our team are getting chances because we've had injuries," said Pickert. "Every- one needs to take a look in the mirror, dig deep, and not talk about playing for each other, but start making sprints, and getting into tackles. "We thrive off of energy, and as soon as we get that collaboratively for 90 minutes, we'll start making turns." Iowa has a quick turnaround, hit- ting the road for a three-game road trip, where it faces Michigan State (Oct. 2), Michigan (Oct. 5), and Wisconsin (Oct. 8) in a span of seven days. "It might be good to get on the road," said DiIanni. "We feel good about our matchups against Michi- gan and Michigan State in terms of our system and our strengths. We're playing good soccer right now, but we have to mentally and physically get stronger and find our- selves in a different place heading into ursday's game against Michigan State. "(And) we need to get healthy… (the injury situa- tion) is becoming laughable. We need the players we are calling on to step up to continue to fill that role, and we need to put together 90 minutes of soccer."
