In this column, we will highlight some quick tips and common questions asked by coaches around the nation. This month I will explain the importance of classifying your athletes from the aspect of records management, as well as how it assists in the success of your team and the SSSF. As far as the management and record-keeping of your athlete records, it is crucial to keep on top of what class your athletes are in – in each specific classification system - so the process of shoot registration runs smoothly. I get many support questions dealing with athletes not showing up in a pull-down menu in the registration interface for a given shoot. This is simply due to 1 of 2 reasons: Your athlete was not classified for the specific classification system that the shoot was defined in, OR, the athlete was not marked as shooting that discipline. Always make sure you keep on top of the classes and disciplines your athletes are shooting. "Why so specific and detailed?" you ask? Well, accurately managed records ensure a smooth shoot experience for the host of that shoot, a smooth experience for you as the coach, and faster results for your athletes and those watching at home. Archived shoots and the class of the athlete at the time of the shoot are frozen in time so you can eventually track the athlete's growth and success. Accurate records also ensure that we as an organization can plan and budget accordingly for the growth of our organization, targeting key groups of athletes that may be lacking in numbers, or growing and needing more attention. All of this, in turn, gives you, the members, a much better experience and ensures the success of our organization as a whole! With some of the advancements the SHOT system now allows, we can communicate with our partner organizations that track registered targets in a live or faster manner, sending reports directly to our partners with athlete scores, awards, and much more, and in an accurate manner. Remember, it is our responsibility, as coaches, to manage our athlete's records accurately. After all, this is all about the athletes, their personal growth, development, and enjoyment…and who knows your team better than you?
