DONOR PROFILE Fund established to encourage AU enrollment from Japanese school F or decades, Anderson University alumni have provided academic and spiritual leadership to the students at Tamagawa Seigakuin Junior and Senior High School, an all-girl Christian school in Tokyo. The school is a mission of the Church of God. It was founded in 1950 by the Rev. Shigetoshi Taniguchi, first headmaster of the school. The Rev. Philip Kinley BA '52, MMin '55, DDiv '99 with the support of his wife, Phyllis Kinley BS '52, DDiv '99, served as the second headmaster, serving from 1973 to 1998, and the Rev. Bernard Barton BA '76, MDiv '82, with his wife, Cheryl (Johnson) Barton BA '76, served as the third headmaster of the school from 1998 to 2013. The Kinleys actually began serving as missionaries in Japan in 1955 and pastored several Japanese congregations over the years, including the Tamagawa Church of God. For the last 25 years of their service, Philip also served as head- master of Tamagawa Seigakuin. Under his leadership the school grew both fiscally and educationally and became highly regarded among both Christians and nonChristians. The Bartons began their ministry in Japan as special assignment missionaries in the late 1970s. They returned to Japan in 1982 as associate pastors of Tarumi Church of God in Kobe. During the last five years of their work in Kobe, Bernie became the third headmaster of Tamagawa Seigakuin. During his tenure as headmaster, the school rebuilt its entire campus. Although Cheryl passed away in 2011, Bernie continues to serve as chairman of the board of Tamagawa Seigakuin and as pastor of Tamagawa Church of God in Tokyo. Tamagawa Seigakuin's emphasis on faith and obedience to God's Word helps it maintain its respected position in the Christian community in Japan. Having shared his faith with the young women of Pictured above is the Rev. Bernie Barton (left) with the Revs. Phyllis and Phillip Kinley. Tamagawa Seigakuin Junior and Senior High School and their families for years, Barton now wants to share with them the experience of studying at Anderson University. As a result, Barton, with the help of the Anderson University Office of Development staff, has started the Kinley-Barton Tamagawa Seigakuin Endowed Scholarship Fund, with first priority going to graduates of the Tamagawa Seigakuin school. Not only does this fund benefit the students of Tamagawa Seigakuin, but it also benefits Anderson University by encouraging diversity among the student body.
