Each year, Furman hosts a collegiate cross country invitational in the fall and a track & field invitational in the spring. In 2013, the cross country meet was renamed the Furman University Cross Country Classic. The course is mapped out on Furman's beautiful golf course. The Furman Track & Field Invitational began in 1999 as part of the U.S. Track & Field Collegiate series. Over the past seven years, it has taken on a new look with the inclusion of the Blue Shoes Mile events, including the inaugural Asics Blue Shoes Elite Mile in 2007. On April 7, 2007, former Olympian Alan Webb, one of the country's premier middle distance runners, ran the first-ever sub-four minute mile on a South Carolina track with a time of 3:57.83. Despite the rare cold and blustery conditions, more than 3,000 fans were on hand at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex and Kelsey-West Track to witness the record. In 2013, for the first time in history, multiple athletes recorded a sub-4:00 time in the Blue Shoes Mile. Furman Elite's Cory Leslie won the event, turning in a time of 3:56.18, breaking Webb's meet record. Furman Elite runners claimed the top three spots in the event, as Jeff See placed second with a time of 3:57.45, and Jack Bolas claimed third at 3:58.43. Matt Elliott of Brooks also broke the 4:00 barrier, posting a time of 3:58.78 for fourth place. The Blue Shoes Mile Runs are part of several activities to raise money for Furman's Blue Shoes Track Scholarship program. The brainchild of former Paladin runner Chris Borch '78, the Asics Blue Shoes Mile and related fundraising efforts have already secured nearly $2 million for athletic scholarships. "With track," said Borch, "I learned passion. Track is one of the last pure sports. It brings out in us the things that we admire in others." College Men (10K) 28:47 Boaz Cheboiywo, East.
