Interprofessional Education THE FRAMEWORK OF THE COLLEGE Founded with the principle of advancing interprofessional education and collaboration among the health disciplines within the University, the CHP delivered two broad student interprofessional education initiatives during the school year. The program began with the College and its partner organizations sending two teams to the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Institute. The teams gained a thorough understanding of interprofessional education expectations and were equipped to support these initiatives within the College and among the professional collaborators including the Austen BioInnovation Institute (ABIA) and NEOMED. The initial CHP team trained at the May 2012 Institute included Drs. Marlene Huff and Tim McCarragher as well as Martha Conrad, while the second team, trained in October 2012 included Dr. Tracy Riley and Michelle Boltz. Upon returning to the College, the team met with CHP leadership along with the leaders tasked with interprofessional collaboration at ABIA and NEOMED. These initial meetings set the stage for the development of the first IPE activity within the CHP. Professor Sue Rasor-Greenhalgh supported development of the scenario and facilitated implementation of the case along with Dr. Kathleen Ross-Alaolmoki, Dr. Sandy Hudak, Becky Thomas, Diane Brown, Heather Schober, Mary Flood, Pam Bonnet, Kathy Horning, Linda McArdle and Melissa McCollister. A second student program, also serving to pilot the IPE process was conducted during the second semester. Martha Conrad and Dr. James Grand coordinated the two student IPE pilot activities. In an effort to expand the Interprofessional opportunities in year two, an extensive faculty development workshop closed the school year and engaged 75 health care professions from the CHP and its partner organizations – NEOMED – Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy, and ABIA. Tasked with identifying common challenges faced by interprofessional health care teams and developing an enhanced appreciation for effective interprofessional collaboration, students from Nutrition/Dietetics, Social Work, Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, Nursing, Pharmacy and Medicine along side professionals in each of these disciplines participated in a simulation involving a female veteran with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Interim Dean, Dr. Roberta DePompei of the CHP and NEOMED Associate Dean for Community Partnerships, and Dr. Anthony Costa co-chaired the inaugural event. 3
