The University of Akron College of Health Professions DEAN'S LETTER The changing face of health care over the past decade created an opportunity for The University of Akron to strategically address the importance of interprofessional education related to our health disciplines. In July 2012 this vision became a reality with the creation of the College of Health Professions (CHP), a bold step in preparing students for the demands of an ever-changing health care world. Now, as we complete our first year, I am excited to say that our individual schools and programs are continuing to contribute to community wellness within this new organizational structure. The School of Nursing effectively maintained its standard of excellence in both undergraduate and graduate programming. Licensure passage continues to exceed state and national averages. Community outreach and the ability to serve the vulnerable populations within the Greater Akron area have also been expanded. The new School of Nutrition and Dietetics is positioned to successfully meet student and employer expectations and become an integral component of the CHP. Students in each of the program areas are doing well post graduation and the new Food and Environmental Nutrition program has established strong partnerships with key employers in the region. The School of Social Work has enhanced its regional reputation, receiving a ranking of 104 by US News & World Report. Its joint program also began offering classes at the UA Lakewood Academic Center. 2 The School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology continues to excel. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs continue to address the needs of its students, preparing them for advanced study and exceptional careers in areas ranked among the best job opportunities in the country – 4th for Audiology and 12th for Speech Language Pathology. One of the core principles of the CHP is the opportunity for faculty and students to engage interprofessionally. The Interprofessional Education (IEP) initiatives have brought each of the CHP disciplines together to develop dynamic educational opportunities on campus. And these successes are only the beginning for the CHP. The foundation established in year one will create an operational standard that will allow the CHP to continue to innovate and set the standard for interprofessional health care education in Ohio and across the region. Throughout this report we will provide an overview of the CHP and its schools and showcase those initiatives that advance our mission of improving health for individuals, families and the communities to which we contribute. Yours in health and wellness, Roberta DePompei Interim Dean College of Health Professions
