The Golf Chronicles was written by Teri Brinkman, former golf Sports Information Director, ORIGIN OF THE PALADIN and Marguerite Hays, former Director of University Relations at Furman. Golf Furman University athletic teams were known by different names until the course and campus photos are by Jeremy Fleming, with action photography by 1961 school year. The baseball team was "Hornets," the football team "Hurricane," Patrick Collard, Jeremy Fleming, and the Southern Conference. Cover design is by and the basketball team "Paladins." Sport Productions. Special thanks to the late Alester G. Furman III for his support of The basketball team was dubbed "Paladins" by a Greenville sportswriter in the Furman golf programs. the 1930s, and the name stuck. By vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams became the "Paladins" on September 15, 1961. A Paladin is a knight on a horse, and is the recognized mascot of Furman's athletic teams. Furman golf teams share a championship tradition, with many of our alumni joining the pro tour. It is this legacy of excellence that inspired the creation of the Purple Tee Club, the new booster organization for the Furman men's and women's golf teams. We invite you to join the Purple Tee Club and help support our Paladins. Your membership will help raise awareness of Furman's golf programs and assist with the financial responsibilities of maintaining one of the top programs in college golf. You will also receive priority access to special events, a quarterly newsletter, and a tee gift. An individual membership is $100.
