INSIDE WOMEN'S SOCCER BY JEREMY WODAJO @BADGERWSOCCER SCHEDULE COMING UP Aug. 15 Marquette (Exhibition) Aug. 23 Aug. 24 Aug. 30 Sept. 1 Sept. 6 Youthful optimism: Young talent to lead UW in 2013 Roster highlighted by top-20 recruiting class he Wisconsin women's soccer team enters 2013 with the mindset of making a return trip to the NCAA tournament this season after earning a bid in three of the last four years. With just two seniors on the current roster, the Badgers will rely heavily on their underclassmen to guide the team to that second-straight T 48 // VARSITY August 8, 2013 appearance. Junior Cara Walls, a secondteam All-Big Ten honoree in 2012 and Big Ten All-Freshman team standout Kinley McNicoll, will play huge roles in UW's success this season and will likely fill the voids left by Monica Lam-Feist and Lindsey Johnson, but it will be the freshmen class that may provide the biggest boost in the 7 p.m. 8 p.m. 1 p.m. 7 p.m. 1 p.m. 5 p.m. at UConn at Illinois State at Oregon at Oregon State Vanderbilt talent and technical area. Paula Wilkins welcomed in a 2013 class that was touted as a top-20 group by many women's soccer publications. Wilkins herself admitted this is one of the top-five classes she has ever recruited in over 20 years of coaching, which is impressive when looking at the pro and Olympic careers many of her former players have gone on to enjoy. Among the talented newcomers are Ohio natives Rose Lavelle and Micaela Powers. If healthy, the duo will make an immediate impact on UW's attacking unit and will help take the burden off of Walls who has led the Badgers in points each of the last two seasons. RICHARD EARNS GK OF THE YEAR ● Badgers GK Genevieve Richard earned the W-League's GK of the Year honor on July 27. The Saint-Bruno, Quebec, native led the W-League with six shutouts in 11 matches for the Laval Comets and earned a 0.545 goals-against average during the regular season. LAVELLE TRAINING WITH U.S. U20 ●Freshman Rose Lavelle was recently called up to train with the U.S. U20 women's national team in preparation for their match against Japan later this month. Lavelle has earned five caps in international play with the U.S. squad.
