Rowers still optimistic
despite late start
Poor weather doesn't deter season's hopes
M
ost years, the Wisconsin rowing teams
are on Lake Mendota by
the third or fourth week in
March. This hasn't been like
most years.
The ice on the surrounding lakes didn't recede until the third week of April,
which forced the cancelation
of the men's regatta against

Michigan on April 6.
In addition to the conditions on Lake Mendota,
the Badgers have also been
plagued with bad luck on the
road.
The women's openweights
had to cancel a race on Lake
Macbride in Iowa City, Iowa,
because conditions became
unsafe. It was the first race
women's head coach Bebe Bryans can
recall that was called off completely
due to unsafe water conditions.
The women's lightweights also
had to cancel their trip to Boston last
week due to safety concerns during
the man hunt for the Boston Marathon bombers.
This has created a slow start to the
seasons for all three of the rowing
teams at UW. There's only so much
you can do inside the boathouse, and
its necessary to be able to get on the
water for the coaches to figure out
the best lineups.
However, this year's special set
of circumstances has motivated the
rowers more than ever before -- being on the water is a seen as a privilege not to be taken for granted.
Bryans noted that, while this year
"is what it is," there's nothing any of
the coaches could ask for more than
to have all of the rowers as dedicated
as they are now, which can only lead
to another successful season.
