BADGERING... SHANNEL BLACKSHEAR SOFTBALL A senior first baseman, Shannel Blackshear has been a fixture in the Wisconsin infield during her four seasons. The Sierra Vista, Ariz., native has started in 189 of the 191 games the Badgers have played in the past four years. After playing third base for three seasons, Blackshear moved across the diamond to first, where she has started all 34 games in 2013. This year, Blackshear wrote her name in the UW record book with a school-record 127 career RBI and is two home runs away from tying the UW career record. What is a favorite memory from your time at Wisconsin so far? One of my favorite memories was when we went out to California my sophomore year for our spring break trip. We got to spend the week in California playing softball, but I think the best part about it was all of the things we did together as a team. We got to go to the beach, have a barbeque, play volleyball it was a really fun experience. If you had to choose college again, would you choose Wisconsin? I would choose Wisconsin again because I feel like it has helped shape me as a softball player and a person. It is a beautiful campus, it is an amazing opportunity. I wouldnt change any of the things Ive gone through, good and bad. Is Wisconsin your first experience with the changing seasons? Yes, I was born and raised in Arizona. When I left it was never for a long time, so being here was my first experience going through snow and all of the changing weather. Are you heading back to warmer weather or you officially a Midwest girl? I dont know, I could do either. I kind of like the fact that I can live in a place where there are so many seasons. Warmer places tend to just be warm and then cold for a month. 24 VARSITY APR I L 11, 2013
