Chris Street Award The Chris Street Award, named in honor of former Hawkeye Chris Street, is presented annually to "A Hawkeye player who best exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and intensity of Chris Street." Street died in an auto accident Jan. 19, 1993, midway through his junior year. On Jan. 19, 2013, Iowa will host Wisconsin at 7 p.m. (CT), which will be the 20-year anniversary of the former Hawkeye's death. Former UI men's basketball player Matt Gatens was the 2012 recipient of the Chris Street Award, which is presented annually to "a Hawkeye player who best exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and intensity of Chris Street." Gatens is pictured with Street's father, Mike Street, and UI head basketball coach Fran McCaffery. The Chris Street Memorial plaque is displayed outside the University of Iowa men's basketball team's locker room inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
