Photo by Jackson Smith fromthedean Leadership. The future of medicine calls for leaders in all specialties and all levels of healthcare. At the University of Virginia School of Medicine, our students prepare for that future every day. In fact, for the past 50 years, many students have shown early signs of leadership by participating in the Mulholland Society, which serves as the School of Medicine's student voice. Named in honor of the late faculty leader Dr. Henry Bearden Mulholland, the organization's goals are to promote the interests and concerns of all medical students to faculty and staff as well as to provide an outlet for the academic, social, athletic, and personal interests of students. Alumni, including several who hold leadership positions at the UVA Health System, and current student leaders recently gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mulholland Society. It was a special occasion to recognize the history of this group and its impact on the School of Medicine. You can see photos on page 27. To further support the needs of future leaders, the School of Medicine is partnering with the McIntire School of Commerce to develop a leadership track for medical and graduate students and a leadership certificate for residents and faculty. The program will help the participants learn the skills and qualities needed to flourish as leaders in the field of healthcare. Leadership skills will serve future physicians and scientists well no matter what path they choose. As you read this issue, you will see how current UVA physicians and researchers are setting a strong example by leading in their chosen fields. For example, you'll read about how Drs. Dillingham, Gray and McManus are taking a closer look at the opioid crisis gripping this country and finding possible solutions in the science of addiction. You'll also read about the work of Drs. Hauck and Moon who are using innovative ways to reach new parents with potentially life-saving messages to reduce the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome. Of course, it's important that we acknowledge our many alumni who are leading the way in their chosen fields and are outstanding role models for our students—people like Barbara Bass, MD '79, who was recently elected president of the American College of Surgeons, and Jeffrey Elias, MD '94, the 2018 Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year. We are honored to have them and you among our alumni ranks. In closing, I want to thank you for your continued support. I hope that what we are doing at the School of Medicine—from programs for students, housestaff and faculty to investing in research and more—makes you proud of your affiliation with UVA. As we prepare to graduate another class of future physicians and scientists, I am confident that they have the skills they'll need to succeed, be leaders in their fields, and achieve their dreams.
