defensive end David Gilbert struggled
to express himself in the locker room.
That rarely happens with Gilbert.
There have been times, in fact, when he has
been too expressive.
There have been times when he has been too
honest.
One such time was in late September, the week

of the Big Ten opener at Nebraska.
Gilbert was asked about quarterback Taylor
Martinez, and he said what was on his mind.
Something about bad throwing mechanics and
���skipping rocks.���
That earned him a rebuke from his position
coach, Charlie Partridge.
Gilbert didn���t start against the Huskers.
Before the Big Ten championship game, he was
asked again about Martinez.
This time, he was far more PC, far more diplo-
