22 HTM: One area that falls into the do it right occurs the last Sunday in April, the UI's annual "Day of Caring." What does that mean to the athletic department to see the majority of your sports team participate in that? GARY BARTA: One of the things — I keep referencing "Win. Graduate. Do it Right." because it was the best illustration we could come up with, the three-legged stool. If you don't pay attention to winning, the stool is going to tip over, but if you don't pay attention to graduating, it's going to tip over, and then finally, if you don't do things the right way, it's going to tip over. And our student-athletes annually put in hundreds, if not thousands of hours of volunteer work. e "Day of Caring" is one day where all the teams come together. I think there are 18 projects that are going to be undertaken on that one day by multiple members of our different teams. And they'll go into the community and make a difference. e other day the United Way of Johnson and Washington County recognized the UI Athletics Department, and specifically the student-athletes, as their volunteer organization of the year. And they gave that award to our student-athletes. And I couldn't be more proud of them. IOWA VAULTS TO 31st IN LEARFIELD CUP STANDINGS The University of Iowa has climbed into 31st place in the 2014-15 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competition. The Hawkeyes have accumulated 426.5 points as a result of successful participation in NCAA postseason competition in nine sports to date — football, women's basketball, men's basketball, men's indoor track and field, women's swimming and diving, men's swimming and diving, men's gymnastics, and wrestling. The nine sports represent a 50 percent increase over a year ago when the UI had six teams score points in fall or winter NCAA championships. The UI scored 401.5 points during the 2014- 15 winter sports championship season. The Hawkeyes were paced by Tom Brands' wrestling team that scored 90 points for its second-place finish at the national championships, and 64 points from JD Reive's men's gymnastics team's sixth-place finish at its national championships, 64 points as a result of Lisa Bluder's women's basketball team advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, and 50 points from Fran McCaffery's men's basketball program that advanced to its second straight NCAA Tournament and recorded its first tournament win in 14 years. "I'm excited with the success our teams had this winter and proud of our student-athletes' accomplishments. The current standing in the Directors Cup is another validation of the hard work our student-athletes and coaches have invested," said Gary Barta, director of athletics at the University of Iowa.
