20 We also know that winning is No. 1. In order to have the most fun for all of us, for the athletic director, the head football coach, and every fan who cheers the Hawkeyes, winning is No. 1. But there's also things we can continue to do to make that great environment around Kinnick Stadium even better. I'm going to use one example. e Wisconsin game last year, we lost the game, and certainly we all wanted to win that game. But the environment around game day was electric. It was a little bit later in the day. Fans were able to tailgate (more than an 11 a.m. start allows for). Kinnick Stadium was electric and alive. And, so we lost (the game), but I think fans came and le and would say "I had a great time." So we have to have more of that and we're focused on providing that. HTM: Let's move off local issues to national issues and one of them being this discussion about cost of attendance. Boil that down to simple terms for our fans to understand. GARY BARTA: Simple terms, the debate is whether or not to pay student-athletes for play. Most of my colleagues around the country and I agree that most people are against paying student-athletes for playing. at said, the value of a scholarship is incredible. A student-athlete comes to Iowa, they get their scholarship. ey get all their training, all their travel, all their meals and equipment paid for. So while we're not supportive of paying for play, what we did want to do is take a look at what's included in a scholarship….tuition, room and board, books, fees, University of Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta congratulates head coach Lisa Bluder following a win over Minnesota on March 1 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
