that he has fit himself in the system.
"When he walks up to the huddle, he looks more
comfortable and I think the football team is more
comfortable around him, similar to how they were
when Joel was walking (up to the huddle)."
Translating the body language, he said, "They're
saying, 'Hey, this guy can get it done for us."'
Asked if there was one throw Saturday that stood
out more than the others, McEvoy didn't hesitate to
say, "I only had a few completions but it was the one
to Kenzel (Doe) for the touchdown."
During the "first half," or the controlled segment
of the scrimmage, McEvoy rolled to his right and
delivered a perfectly-timed dart in the end zone to
Doe, who had gotten separation on the corner.
"I told Tanner that he put the ball exactly where
it needed to be," said the 5-foot-8 Doe, who made a
nice catch stretching out for the pass. "He threw it
out there and it was a perfect throw."
McEvoy has focused on his mechanics. "I think
I've cleaned up my motion pretty well," he said. "I
can do maybe one or two things to quicken it a little
more, maybe come over the top more."
Sharpening his footwork in the pocket will be an-
other priority over the summer. He's already shown
his skills and instincts in running the football when
the situation calls for it.
"That's just me trying to make a play when things
break down," McEvoy said. "That's what I kind of
bring to the table. But I ran when I could have passed
a couple of times (Saturday). It goes both ways.
"I just have to work on the decision-making along
with my pocket presence and my footwork and just
getting the ball out on time. That's my main goal."
In the short window that he has played the posi-
tion ― all of four years ― McEvoy has been tagged
as a "dual-threat" quarterback because he poses a
threat as a runner and a thrower.
Is that what he is? "I am, but I want to pass the
ball," he stressed. "When things break down, I have
the ability to run. I can run a bit, so I'm more of a
dual-threat, but I'm looking to pass."
McEvoy and Stave, of course, are looking at the
same thing: the starting assignment for the 2014
opener against LSU. Andersen promised it would be
a fight. Neither would have it any other way.
