26 // VARSITY March 20, 2014 BADGERING CHASE KINNEY A native of Canton, Ohio, Chase Kinney is preparing to compete in her first NCAA championships this weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. After earning first-team All-Big Ten honors and helping UW earn a conference title in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the 2014 Big Ten Championships, Kinney and her teammates will look to use that momentum to earn a spot on the podium at the NCAA meet. What has been your most exciting experience as a freshman? "I'm really excited for my senior year. It's crazy that three seasons have already passed. I'm lucky to be on this team and in this program. I know we have a tough schedule ahead of us, but I think we're all embracing it and we're all really excited." What has been the biggest adjustment for you in your first season? "I think the biggest adjustment is the training. It was a big challenge to start doing two practices a day along with weights and spinning. I wasn't used to the amount of training we did this season. It was not only physically tough, but it was mentally tough as well. I had to balance so many new things all at once. It has been a challenge that has made me a stronger athlete and I am excited to see how much I can improve in the next three years." What are you most looking forward to at the NCAA meet? "I am excited for some fast swimming and to be able to have a chance to be a part of Wisconsin swimming history. This meet is another opportunity to have great performances and I am excited to swim some best times. We have a lot of big opportunities as a team to do great things and I am so excited to be able to help us in achieving the goals we set at the beginning of the year." How beneficial has teammate Ivy Martin been in your first season? "Ivy has been a great teammate and it is inspiring to swim with her and race against her at practices and meets. She is a really hard worker and also really fun to be around. When I struggle with swim- ming, I always know I can talk to her about it and she gives me great advice. She is great to look up to as a sprinter and I think she has helped me a lot with preparing me for success at this new level of swimming." What motivates you most to strive for success? "I love the feeling I get when I touch the wall and look up at the clock and see my best time ever. I train with that feeling in the back of my mind because I love the thrill of swimming a great race. This feeling of excitement motivates me to keep striving for it. It is exciting to be able to know that everything you have worked so hard for and sacrificed so much for has paid off." Favorite book? Harry Potter series Favorite meal? Thanksgiving dinner Twitter or Instagram? Instagram Favorite athlete? Jason Lezak (Olympic gold medalist) Early bird or night owl? Night owl QUICK Q'S WITH CHASE
