Home cookin: teDuits and
Martin carry the UW torch
Duo continues long line of in-state swim talent
L
ast weekend, at the 2014
Big Ten Women's Swim-
ming and Diving Cham-
pionships, Ivy Martin not only
defended her Big Ten title in
the 50-yard freestyle, she add-
ed another individual crown
to her trophy case by winning
the 100-yard freestyle and set-
ting a new conference mark in
the process.
Now as the UW men's squad
travels to Ann Arbor, Mich.,
for the Big Ten champion-
ships this weekend. Drew
teDuits returns as the reign-
ing Big Ten champion in the
200-yard backstroke, a title he
also earned at the 2013 NCAA
Championships.
Aside from the duo's junior-
standing at UW, there is anoth-
er unnoticeable similarity be-
tween the pair: they are both
Madison, Wis., natives.
Between the amount of national suc-
cess both teDuits and Martin have ac-
complished in the pool during their ca-
reers at UW, and the hype that followed
them during their days on the Madison
youth swimming circuit, the duo has
indirectly brought attention back to an
area that has produced great talent.
"Madison, and the state of Wisconsin,
are great areas for swimmers," UW head
coach Whitney Hite said. "I swam in col-
lege with one of the best male swimmers
ever, who grew up in Verona, Neil Walker.
"So there's a tradition here of some
very solid swimming, and we're just for-
tunate enough to have two of the best
(on our team)."
Other notable in-state swimmers in-
clude six-time All-American Fred West-
phal (Janesville) and four-time Olympic
medalist Jim Montgomery (Madison).
Martin and teDuits are now the torch-
bearers for the current crop of in-state
talent and, according to Hite, both are
poised to enter rarified air before their
time is up at UW.
"There's a reason why both are on the
U.S. National Team," Hite said. "It means
that you're one of the top six in the coun-
try. And to have them both from (Madi-
son) and to go (here) is even more spe-
cial."
