In Memoriam • Susan Gaston For the bulk of her career, Susan Gaston had watched her students go pretty much straight from the classroom and clinicals to treating real people. But that was before iStan. Gaston introduced the lifelike computerized patient to The University of Tulsa School of Nursing in 2008. With the ability to simulate various disease symptoms, iStan "gives students the oppor - tunity to learn in a safe environment where they can make mistakes and not hurt anybody," Gaston told the Tulsa World at the time. Bringing in iStan was typical of Gaston's forward-thinking style, colleagues said. The longtime nursing professor of TU and School of Nursing director was always looking at ways her field could be improved by technology. Susan Kathleen Gaston, who had directed the TU nursing school for 23 years, died Oct. 1, 2013. She was 65. A native of Pittsburg, Kan., Gaston came to TU in 1991 from Ball State University in Indiana. Since that time, she had been instrumental in the successful development of the School of Nursing, said Gale Sullenberger, dean of the college. John is a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the TU Masters of Energy program. 1990s Doug McMillon (MBA 1990), has been named presi- dent and CEO of WalMart. The world's largest retailer made the announcement on Nov. 25, 2013. McMillon's 23-year career with WalMart began with a summer associate position in 1984. Six years later, he became a trainee buyer at a Tulsa WalMart while earning his MBA from TU's Collins College of Business. After graduation, McMillon advanced through the company ranks working in merchandising and leading the Sam's Club warehouse retailer division from 2006 to 2009. He most recently served as president and CEO of WalMart International. McMillon was featured as the keynote speaker at a TU Friends of Finance lecture in 2010. The 47-year-old succeeds Mike Duke who has announced his retirement. McMillon will begin his new role as WalMart's fifth CEO since founder Sam Walton on Feb. 1. Carl Chasteen (BSBA 1996), pictured on the right, is currently deployed with the U.S. Army to Afghanistan. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on Sept 1, 2013. He was in the ROTC program at TU and upon graduation, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He is currently on his 4th deployment. Jess Chouteau Outstanding Seniors Three students from the Collins College of Business were honored as Jess Chouteau Outstanding Seniors during TU home- coming festivities. The award recognizes seniors who demonstrate exceptional achievement in both academic and service endeavors. The college congratulates these individuals who have made a posi- tive impact on TU and the Tulsa community. Curtis French is the son of alumna Anita French (BSBA '83) of Bartlesville, Okla. An accounting major, Curtis is currently serving as president of Beta Alpha Psi, president of Mortar Board and purser of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity. He is a member of Order of Omega, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Upon graduation, Curtis plans to attend The University of Tulsa to obtain his master's of accountancy before sitting for the CPA exam. Thomas Porter is the son of Raymond and Denise Porter of St. Louis, Mo. A double major in energy management and finance, Thomas is the mentor chair for the Tulsa Energy Management Students Association, president of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators Tulsa Student Club, past president of Leaders Incorporated and an Orientation Leader. Thomas studied abroad in Aberdeen, Scotland, as part of the energy management program where he interned with the company Decom North Sea. Upon graduation, Thomas will work as a landman with ConocoPhillips in Houston. Valerie Roarty is the daughter of James and Rita Roarty of Overland Park, Kan. A double major in finance and economics, Valerie serves as the current president of the Student Finance Association, the special events chair for University Ambassadors, and an Orientation Leader. Upon graduation, Valerie will work for Williams Companies as a business analyst in the Professional Development Program. He added that Gaston's leader- ship, backed by an excellent faculty, helped TU's nursing program grow in reputation and esteem not only within the state's healthcare community but beyond it. That included leading the program successfully through three national accreditations. A registered nurse, Gaston was a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of California at San Francisco and held a doctorate in education from Kansas State University. She also had taught at Wichita State University, Marymount College of Kansas and Pittsburg State University. Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Lawrence Gaston; and a brother, Joe Pucci. – excerpted the Tulsa World. Bridgestone picks Crum for president Automotive retail specialist Stu Crum (BSBA '82) was named presi- dent of Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC. in July 2013. He most recently served as president of Jiffy Lube International, a subsidiary of Shell Oil Company. In his role at Jiffy Lube, Crum managed the company's more than 2,100 North American service centers, serving 22 million customers annually. Over the years, Crum has taken on positions of increasing respon - sibility at Shell including vice president of national accounts for North American auto- motive consumer products, general manager of strategy and portfolio, and director of marketing. His Shell career follows a 15-year stint in Texaco Inc.'s marketing and retail divisions. While attending TU on a football schol - arship, Crum received a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing. He spent three years as a place kicker in the NFL and USFL.
