For coach Bobbie Kelsey, Sunday's 80-49 win over Division II Winona State was a pleasant surprise. "We have a lot of depth and return a lot of scorers from last year," Kelsey said. After the 2012-13 season when the Badgers played with only nine athletes due to injuries, this season's depth is a welcome sight to Kelsey. "We have an opportunity to showcase a lot of different lineups, a lot of different combinations." UW-Stevens Point Drake at Milwaukee Northern Illinois 7 p.m. 2 p.m. 7 p.m. 2 p.m. SEASON OPENING SUCCESS ● Head coach Bobbie Kelsey looks to improve to 3-0 in season openers as she is 2-0 in her first two seasons at UW. The Badgers defeated Milwaukee 7456 last season and also downed the Panthers on the road 68-51 in 2011. In 38 years of play, Wisconsin is 2216 all-time in season openers, including a 10-4 mark at home. TOUGH SCHEDULE AHEAD ● The Badgers have a tough schedule in 2013-14 with seven non-conference games against 2013 postseason teams. In addition, eight Big Ten teams played in the NCAA or WNIT in 2013. The non-conference schedule features NCAA tournament participants Gonzaga and Green Bay, as well as a possible matchup against Vanderbilt at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. WNIT participants were Marquette, Washington, Mercer and Elon. Among Big Ten teams, Nebraska advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in 2013 while Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Purdue all lost in the second round of play. The Big Ten also sent two teams to the WNIT in 2013, with Illinois advancing to the quarterfinals and Minnesota falling in the first round.
