Wisconsin peaking as
season hits its high point
UW looks third-straight Big Ten top-five finish
he end of October marks
the start of the championship season for cross
country teams across the nation. It also marks the time
of the year the Badgers have
been working toward for the
past four months.
"This is the time of year we
trained for," UW Director of
Cross Country and Track &
Field Mick Byrne said. "This is
T
the time of year that our student-athletes and coaches get
excited for. There's a bit different atmosphere around the
locker room and that certainly
can feel it already today."
Wisconsin has a lot to be
excited about, as the Badgers
have won three meets this year
and have two other impressive
finishes, including a 17th-place
showing at the Wisconsin adi-

das Invitational two weeks ago.
Freshman Sarah Disanza was UW's top
finisher, finishing the 6-kilometer course
in 20:34 to finish 42nd, while sophomore Emma-Lisa Murphy was 61st in
20:47. Molly Hanson, Erin Cawley and
Kelly Whitley rounded out the scoring
for the Badgers, finishing 123rd, 134th
and 142nd, respectively against a field of
almost 300 runners.
As with the men, the same core of runners that competed at the adidas Invitational will run at the Big Ten meet, but
Byrne believes there will definitely be a
different feel to the race.
"The adidas meet is a different meet,"
Byrne said. "You get 300 competitors
going into adidas, but there's only just
about 100 competitors in the Big Ten
meet. It's head-to-head competition.
"It's exciting because you've got to run
Badger tough and the team understands
what that means."
MOVING ON UP IN THE POLLS
● The Badgers, for the first time this
season, checked in at No. 28 in the
U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Coaches Poll. Wisconsin also remains at No. 6 in the
Great Lakes Region, according to the
USTFCCCA Regional Rankings, and
trails Big Ten rivals Michigan State,
Michigan and Indiana in the regional
ranks.
