The 2003-04 season was the last time the Cardinal had failed to earn the regular season title outright. Stanford went on to win their seventh-straight Pac-12 tournament title and advanced to the Sweet 16, their sixth-conseutive appearance in the round of 16 or better. JOHN R. WOODEN COACH OF THE YEAR Tara VanDerveer Stanford FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR Arielle Roberson Colorado PLAYER OF THE YEAR DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Chiney Ogwumike Stanford A total of six teams advanced to post-season play as UCLA and COLORADO joined Cal and Stanford in the NCAA Tournament and UTAH and WASHINGTON earned WNIT bids. The Buffs reached the tournament after an eightyear drought while the Bruins returned after a one-year absence and advanced to the second round. Washington advanced to the second round or better in the WNIT for the second-straight year. UTAH made an impressive postseason run winning five straight games, inlcluding two overtime victories, to reach the WNIT final. Overall, Pac-12 teams posted a 12-4 postseason record in games versus non-conference opponents and four teams finished in the top-25 AP rankings. Chiney Ogwumike, sister of former Stanford and Pac-12 Standout Nnemkadi Ogwumike, was a consensus AllAmerican and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight year. She added Pac-12 Player of the Year to her list of accolades and still has one year of elibility left as a Cardinal. Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors went to Colorado's Arielle Roberson, the first Buff to earn the postseason honor since the Buffs joined the Pac-12. California's Gennifer Brandon and Layshia Clarendon, Colorado's Chucky Jeffery, Utah's Michelle Plouffe, and UCLA's Markel Walker garnered Honorable Mention Associated Press All-America nods, as well. Tara VanDerveer, who was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame two summers ago, was named the John R. Wooden Coach of the Year for the 13th time in 27 years at the helm. She's only the eighth female coach to be inducted.
