BADGERING EMMA-LISA MURPHY Sophomore Emma-Lisa Murphy has become one of Wisconsin's top runners this year, earning Big Ten Co-Runner of the Week honors after scoring a 10th-place finish at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown last month. A native of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Murphy and the Badgers host the fifth-annual Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Saturday as 17 ranked teams, including seven of the nation's top 10, will compete in the 6-kilometer race at the Zimmer Championship Course. "We are feeling great. Going into adidas, we are prepared and focusing on getting our name out there. It was nice to have a solid training block after Boston and now we are all ready to see what we are able to do with so many ranked teams competing at the meet. It is exciting getting to go up against those ranked teams and see where we are." What's the team's feeling heading into the Wisconsin adidas Invitational? "It is definitely an advantage competing at home. We do at least one workout a week at the course. We are familiar with the course, which can be an advantage racing it, knowing what is coming ahead. We know the hills, we know the turns, and knowing those things is an advantage. It's fun racing at home. There are a lot of people cheering you on as we are representing not only the university but the state." What kind of advantage do you get running at home in cross country? "It was really nice to have that freshman year. Being on the travel squad, it was part of the learning experience. I have learned a lot last year that I have been applying this year, and it is going to be a constant learning experience. I hope that a successful cross country season this year will benefit me in the spring during track season." How have you grown as a runner since your freshman year? "Fall steals my heart, mostly because of cross country and I love to run in the fall. I love the changing of the leaves and the fall colors. Fall is definitely my favorite, but I also love the winter activities. I competed on the ski team in high school, which was a fun social experience, and I love the beautiful snow. Winter does make running hard, though." What is your favorite season? "I love to cook. I love to look for and try new recipes. As a distance athlete, we enjoy making new recipes. My family really enjoys cooking and making family dinners, so my love of cooking comes from my mom and dad cooking. It is a social thing that brings friends and family together. Recently, I used spaghetti squash and made a pasta dish that was really good and my roommates and I really enjoyed it." What do you like to do when you aren't running? "I am a business major, so my macroeconomics class is my favorite. I like the real world application the class brings to the table. We learn more about current events and current business in the world, which is interesting to apply."
