INSIDE WOMEN'S SOCCER BY JEREMY WODAJO @BADGERWSOCCER SCHEDULE LAST WEEK Aug. 23 at UConn Aug. 30 at Illinois State COMING UP Aug. 30 at Oregon Sept. 1 at Oregon State Sept. 6 Vanderbilt Sept. 11 at Loyola-Chi. Family matters: Meuer continues family legacy Sophomore serves as Badgers' unsung leader he term "glue guy" is used to refer to a team's unsung leader ― the one who is rarely credited with a victory but who is always the one coaches count on to hold their team together. McKenna Meuer fits that bill perfectly. The sophomore appeared in 20 games for the Badgers last season as a freshman, starting T 56 // VARSITY August 29, 2013 in 19 and displayed her biggame ability by finishing tied for the lead in game-winning goals (3). Beyond that, UW head coach Paula Wilkins counted on Meuer to uplift her team when they were down or provide a signature defensive play when the Badgers looked to be out of sync. "(McKenna's) pride and in- W, 3-2 W, 4-1 7 p.m. 1 p.m. 5 p.m. 7 p.m. tensity is so intense and it rubs off on her teammates," Wilkins said. "She understands the tradition of what it means to play at this university and she takes that distinction very seriously." That pride is a product of the large family Meuer is a part of and their UW roots. Dating back to the mid-1950s, nearly 30 members of Meuer's family tree attended UW, with a handful of them playing a varsity or club sport, or serving as a member of the school's spirit squad. Among her immediate family members, both of Meuer's sisters played soccer at UW, while her brother, Keegan, is currently a member of the men's hockey team. Her father, grandfather and great grandfather were also members of a varsity or club sports while enrolled. "UW has been an integral part of my family even before I was even born," Meuer said. "My pride and motivation stems directly from my family, and their support has been incredible." THE GREAT WALLS ● In her 2013 debut, Cara Walls picked up right where she left off in 2012. The junior guided UW to a season-opening win over UConn with a goal in the 81st minute, following that up with a twogoal outing vs. Illinois State.
