BADGERING
ALEX ERICKSON
Redshirt freshman Alex Erickson emerged as one of the Badgers'
top wide receivers during fall camp and is expected to see plenty
of playing time in Saturday's season opener vs. UMass. A walkon, the Darlington, Wis., native redshirted his first season at
UW after enrolling early to take part in spring practice in 2012
following an all-state high school career as a quarterback and
defensive back.
What do you think you showed the coaches that has
you in the mix at wide receiver?
"Overall, I think I showed I can be trusted to go out,
line up and make plays on balls in the air. I still have a
long way to go and I'm just trying to improve every
single say. I still have to be more consistent and
work on a lot of technique things."
What are you most looking forward to
this season?
"The opportunity. Every game, every week
and every day at practice is a new opportunity. I want to come in here and show
Badger fans what I have to offer."
You had the opportunity to play basketball
at UW-Stevens Point, but decided to walk on
with the Badgers instead. Why?
"The walk-on tradition here at Wisconsin is a
great one, so I wanted the opportunity to be a
part of that and be a part of this program. The
chance to be a part of this program is something that you dream about as a Badgers fan
growing up in Wisconsin. I got the opportunity and I'm going to try to make the most of it."
Are players like Jared Abbrederis or Luke
Swan, receivers that were walk-ons and went
on to make an impact, role models for you?
"Absolutely. When they have advice for me I listen to them because they were in my position
and went on to make an impact on the field.
There are a lot of other guys too, like Ethan
Hemer, Ethan Armstrong and Kyle Zuleger,
who all show that your hard work does pay
off and people notice."
