Oh, Canada: Season starts
in August for Badgers
Canada trip includes five games in six days
t has been quite a busy summer for those close to the
Badgers men's basketball
program.
Aside from welcoming new
head strength coach Erik Helland and enduring the twohour NCAA-allowed workouts each week, UW was also
granted 10 organized team
practices leading up to its trip
to Canada at the end of August.

The Badgers have not taken an international trip since
2006 when the team visited
Italy, but UW will venture to
Canada for an eight-day business trip, visiting Ottawa and
Toronto.

erhouse Carleton University. Following
a game with the University of Ottawa on
Aug. 22, the Badgers will travel to Toronto for three games in three days against
the Canadian Junior National Team (Aug.
24), Ryerson University (Aug. 25) and
senior men's select team A-Game Hoops
(Aug. 26).
In preparation for the five-game trip,
which is slated to be streamed lived, the
team has been practicing under international rules. Not only will UW be obligated to play under the restraints of a
shorter shot clock (24 seconds) and an
eight-second half court limit but they
must also adjust to the international
goaltending rule which allows a player to
knock the ball away when it is on the rim.
With six incoming freshmen and redshirt junior Josh Gasser returning from
a knee injury, the trip will serve as valuable practice and competition prior to
the start of the season. Head coach Bo
Ryan is doing his part to moderate the
process by returning to his roots as a
school teacher and serving as an instructor for the freshmen in a summer "crash
course" on the Swing offense.
Meanwhile, Gasser's recovery is moving along as expected. The point guard
has begun participating in contact drills
and could see floor time in Canada in a
minimal role.
