WHAT IS IT?
28 VIRGINIA MEDICINE
Home of the UVA Medical Alumni Association
and Medical School Foundation
since 1998, the office of the UVA
Medical Alumni Association and Medical School
Foundation has been located on West Main Street in
Charlottesville, thanks in large part to the generosity
of MacRoy Gasque, MD '44, and his wife, Georgia.
Formerly known as "The John Vowles House," the
building dates back to 1824 and is thought to be the
oldest building on West Main Street. The site is one of
Charlottesville's only surviving examples of Federal
domestic architecture. The property, a registered
historic landmark, is located within walking distance of
the Claude Moore Medical Education Building, the
Health Sciences Library, and the University of Virginia's
Corner district.
Behind the main building, the courtyard includes
the MacRoy and Olene Gasque Medical Memorial
Gardens at the University of Virginia and
a patio of red and Indiana Limestone
bricks. The bricks are inscribed with the
names of supporters, alumni, faculty
and friends of the University of Virginia
School of Medicine.
Bricks are available for purchase
and all proceeds support the Medical
Alumni Association's Building Fund,
which provides funding for property maintenance and
repairs as well as future upgrades. Donations are
tax-deductible.
