accolades Fall 2022 9 The Brodie Medical Education Fund Committee annually recognizes up to five graduating residents from across all UVA medical and surgical residency programs with the Anne L. Brodie Resident Clinician Award. The 2022 recipients are: Erin Baldwin, MD (Internal Medicine); Zach Chancellor, MD (Surgery); Sean Dougherty, MD (Internal Medicine); Eleanor Ginn, MD (Family Medicine); and Nicholas LoSchiavo, MD (Pediatrics). R oger T. Anderson, PhD, received the American Cancer Society's 2021 Researcher of the Year Award. Anderson is a professor of public health sciences, associate director for population sciences, and co-leader for cancer control and population health research at UVA. He was honored for his work exploring metastatic breast cancer. The award recognizes an investigator who has benefitted from an American Cancer Society extramural grant and has made remarkable advances in cancer research. A nne Kenworthy, PhD, was named the recipient of the 2023 Mildred Cohn Award in Biological Chemistry from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The award honors Kenworthy's work in "understanding biological chemistry using innovative physical approaches." She is a professor and assistant director of the Center for Membrane and Cell Physiology, Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at UVA. John P. Mugler, III, PhD, professor of radiology and medical imaging, with a second appointment in biomedical engineering, was awarded a Gold Medal from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). The society recognized him at its 2022 annual meeting "for seminal contributions to the development of multiple rapid MR imaging techniques, in particular for the Magnetization-Prepared with RApid Gradient Echo (MP-RAGE) imaging method which has become routinely used in multiple clinical and research studies worldwide." The ISMRM has over 9,000 members and is the premier society for MRI research. In the 50 years of the society's history, only 80 medals have been awarded. Mitchell H. Rosner, MD, Res '00, Fel '02, chair of UVA's Department of Medicine and Henry B. Mulholland Professor of Medicine, is one of two recipients of the 2022 Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor given to members of the University of Virginia community. The award is presented to honorees who have exemplified the ideals of the University in character, work and influence, and have worked for the University at least 15 years. Rosner was recognized for excellence in service. He has served the University as a physician, educator, scientist and leader, including his role as a scientific and clinical adviser for the University during the COVID-19 pandemic. C hristine Thisse, PhD, and the late Bernard Thisse, PhD, professors of cell biology and of biology, received the George Streisinger Award from the International Zebrafish Society. (Bernard Thisse died in December 2021.) The award recognizes senior investigators who have done sustained and foundational work that has opened new possibilities within the zebrafish field that benefit all research today. In 2021, the Thisses — who previously worked with zebrafish but had recently used a mouse model — made a major breakthrough in scientists' efforts to use stem cells to mimic the natural development of mammals "growing" a properly organized partial mouse embryo from stem cells in vitro. Z hen Yan PhD, professor of cardiovascular medicine and director of the Center for Skeletal Muscle Research, was selected as the recipient of the Novo Nordisk Foundation's Jacobæus Prize 2022. The award is the oldest prize of the Novo Nordisk Foundation. It was established in 1939 to commemorate the Swedish professor Hans Christian Jacobæus. The purpose of the prize is to promote medical research, and it is awarded annually to a distinguished international researcher.
