F R O M T H E D E A N In September 2021, I took one of the most momentous steps in my career journey by joining the University of Virginia as Dean of the School of Medicine. It has been an incredible first year, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our faculty and staff, our students and trainees, and our alumni. Together, we have accomplished so much. If you haven't already done so, I hope you will read my "One Year — Progress and Promise" message at UVAMedAlum.org/one-year. Here are a few highlights: • U.S. News & World Report 2022–2023 Best Medical Schools ranked the UVA School of Medicine #30 among 192 schools, placing the School among the top 15% of medical schools in the country. • Our residency programs also continue to rank nationally with six programs in the top decile and six programs in the top quartile as ranked by Doximity. • A record number of 100 faculty members were promoted in 2022, of which 48% were women and 6% were underrepresented in medicine. • UVA Children's is the #1 children's hospital in Virginia for the second year in a row as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. • With over $235 million in total research and $148 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research awards, the School of Medicine's research program ranked #42 in the nation by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. • We worked hard to achieve a historic milestone by introducing the first UVA Health-wide strategic plan inclusive of all four mission areas. The plan will be published broadly soon. As proud as I am about what we've accomplished over the past year, I am also confident in the future of our School and of UVA Health. For example, in this issue, you will read about a new endeavor that is a first in the world — UVA's Focused Ultrasound Cancer Immunotherapy Center. This collaborative effort is opening new fronts in the war against many different cancers, and it is a great example of the progress and promise being made by UVA physicians and scientists every day. In closing, please know that all of us at UVA also take pride in the accomplishments of our alumni, including the recipients of the UVA Medical Alumni Association's 2022 Awards. Together, we are shaping the future of medicine. Sincerely, Melina Kibbe, MD Dean, UVA School of Medicine James Carroll Flippin Professor of Medical Science Chief Health Affairs Officer, UVA Health As proud as I am about what we've accomplished over the past year, I am also confident in the future of our School and of UVA Health. Dear Alumni:l
