F R O M T H E D E A N
I recently had the great honor of attending my first Match Day ceremony at the
University of Virginia School of Medicine. It was a beautiful day, filled with smiles
and happy tears, as students of the Class of 2022 celebrated this milestone
in their journeys to becoming physicians and scientists. It was a momentous day,
too, as it marked the first in-person Match Day at UVA since March 2019.
As dean of the School of Medicine, I take great pride in knowing that UVA medical
students matched into 23 different specialty programs across 40 states, with
32 students matching into programs at UVA. They have overcome the challenges
of learning during a global pandemic, thanks in no small part to the commitment
and flexibility of our dedicated faculty. These students are exceptionally
prepared for the next phase in their training, and I know you join me in wishing
them well as they move forward.
Speaking of well wishes, I would like to say thank you to all
of the alumni, students, trainees, staff, and faculty who have
welcomed me so warmly to UVA. It has been wonderful
to hear from you these past six months, and I look forward to
the opportunity to hear from many more of you in the future.
It is quite clear to me from the messages I have received
and the conversations I have had that UVA is a very special
place. It is more than an institution. It is a place people
feel proud to be associated with and they want to be part of
its continued success.
In the pages ahead, you will read about some of our recent research discoveries,
as well as new people joining us at UVA like Paola Gehrig, MD, Res '97 and
Allan Tsung, MD, our new chairs of obstetrics/gynecology and surgery. You'll also
read stories about and news from people like you who are taking the training
they received at UVA and making an impact. I hope you will be as inspired as I am
by the difference UVA is making in the field of medicine.
Thank you for all you do to support the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Sincerely,
Melina Kibbe, MD
