STAYING GREEN printers, with over 77 models 230 energy-ecient printers 116 Technology has led to some remarkable changes for the banking industry. Think back to the paper statements you used to get, or those canceled checks you received through snail mail. Now, there are electronic transactions for most purchases and services, and mobile deposits can be delivered via smartphone to your account. So much data is now digitally stored and accessed. Are paper records largely a thing of the past? Not just yet. And while Alpine Bank applauds the advancements that online and mobile banking have made for the planet, the bank recognizes it still has need of paper—and printers, for many of its operations. So the bank's leadership took a deep dive to assess its use of printers and related resources, which revealed some new and better ways to continue eorts to reduce both paper and the bank's carbon footprint. They studied what eciencies could be derived by switching to a standardized eet of printers. "The ndings were eye-opening," said Doug Merrell, EVP of information technology. "In just our 40 locations we had 230 printers spread over 77 dierent models, not counting the teller receipt printers. It represented a support, supply, training, logistics, maintenance, and security nightmare, not to mention that number equaled one printer for every three employees. We even found closets and drawers full of unused supplies and consumables for printers that had been replaced years ago." In addition to environmental benets, the team discovered they could realize substantial savings not only on the hardware, but the supplies and maintenance which is based o pages printed. "It was very evident that we had the ability to realize a huge savings in costs and resources while providing a better experience for our employees and customers." With this information, the team reviewed what it would mean to move to a fully managed printer service company, with new printers and comprehensive support. The long list of benets included improved customer service, quality, eciency, security, reliability and sustainability. Now, not only are the 116 new printers more energy ecient, with the same capabilities and same interface, but removing the less ecient printers from the bank also eliminated a lot of electricity usage, including the "phantom load" that resulted from standby power. Now, all supplies except paper are handled by the vendor, eliminating ordering guesswork and potential waste. With a postage-paid recycle box, waste toner is now shipped back to the managed printer vendor for environmentally friendly recycling. Many of the operational older printers were donated to local school districts, and the ones that were out-of-date were picked up by the bank's managed printer vendor and recycled following electronic and data erasure protocols. LESS IS MORE FOR MANAGED PRINTER PROJECT
