U.S. News' criteria include patient outcomes, patient experience, advanced technologies, physician surveys and accreditations from outside groups such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Magnet recognition for nursing care from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. UVA has earned Magnet recognition and is one of 71 NCI-designated cancer centers nationally. "It is an honor to be ranked the #1 hospital in Virginia for the fifth consecutive year, and I want to congratulate and thank our entire team for their efforts to provide the highest-quality care for our patients in a wide array of specialties," said K. Craig Kent, MD, UVA's executive vice president for health affairs. "It is a privilege to serve patients from across Virginia." Five UVA Children's specialties are ranked among the top 50 nationally in the 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report "Best Children's Hospitals" guide. The five ranked specialties are: • Pediatric cardiology and heart surgery: 37th • Pediatric diabetes and endocrinology: tied for 40th • Pediatric orthopedics: 43rd • Pediatric urology: 43rd • Neonatology: 49th "Providing high-quality, specialized care for our youngest patients requires a tremendous team," said James Nataro, MD, PhD, MBA, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at UVA. "I'm proud to see their commitment recognized nationally by U.S. News." For meeting a set of rigorous best practices for maternity care, the University of Virginia Medical Center, UVA Women's Services and UVA Children's were named to Newsweek's Best Maternity Hospitals 2020 list. According to the publication, "The facilities cited by Newsweek as Best Maternity Hospitals 2020 are an elite group demonstrating excellence in maternity care." "This honor reflects the dedication of the physicians, certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, nurses and numerous staff in Women's and Children's Services to providing excellent, evidence-based and compassionate care for moms and babies," said James E. (Jef) Ferguson, MD, MBA, chairman of UVA's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The University of Virginia Medical Center has earned the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization's Platinum Level Center of Excellence Award for its lifesaving care of patients with severely injured hearts and lungs. The award is the international group's highest honor and fewer than 30 hospitals worldwide have earned this recognition. "This award highlights teamwork that stretches across the medical center, including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UVA Children's, to provide excellent care for patients of all ages," said UVA thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon Nicholas Teman, MD, Fel '08. University of Virginia Medical Center and UVA Children's have earned excellent scores for their support of breastfeeding in a nationwide survey of hospitals conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. UVA received a 91 out of 100 on the Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care survey, far exceeding the Virginia average of 81 and the national average of 79.
