Former University of Iowa left-handed pitcher Matt
Dermody appeared in 28 games for the Toronto Blue
Jays from 2016-17. In 2018, Dermody had Tommy
John surgery before bouncing back to pitch sparingly
in minor league games in 2019.
After becoming a free agent following the 2019
season, Dermody signed with the Sugar Land
Skeeters of the Independent League. He parlayed
that opportunity into a minor league deal with the
Chicago Cubs in early August.
On Sept. 6, Dermody was called up to the Cubs'
active roster. On Sept. 9, he made his Chicago debut,
tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the St. Louis
Cardinals, where he struck out Paul DeJong to start
the inning. (Photo by Chicago Cubs/Steven Green)
