45 HAWKEYE LEADERS • Senior Alex Schaake led the Hawkeyes in rounds at or below par (11) and 18-hole stroke average (71.55). Sophomore Gonzalo Leal Montero finished second on the team in both categories with 10 rounds at or below par and a 71.88 18-hole stroke average. • Schaake posted four top-20 finishes, while Leal Montero finished in the top 20 twice. Senior Benton Weinberg and freshman Matthew Garside each recorded one top-20 finish. • Weinberg posted a 73.72 18-hole stroke average, third-lowest on the team. • Leal Montero posted the lowest 18-hole score of the season in round three of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, firing a 5-under 66. at score ties for the fih-lowest 18-hole round in school history. ENTERING THE RECORD BOOKS • Leal Montero's 54-hole score (208) at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate is tied for the seventh- lowest 54-hole total in program history, and the lowest 54-hole score by a Hawkeye in 2019-20. • e team's combined 54-hole score of 855 at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic is the 13th- lowest score in team history. • Freshman Mac McClear recorded a personal best 67 (-4) in the second round of the Fighting Irish Classic to tie for the sixth-lowest 18-hole round in program history. • Schaake's 71.55 and Leal Montero's 71.88 strokes per 18-holes were the fih- and sixth-lowest season averages, respectively, in school history. PERSONAL BESTS • Junior Jake Rowe recorded his personal best 18- hole (70) and 54-hole (223) scores at the Puerto Rico Classic. • Leal Montero's third round 66 at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic and his 54-hole score of 208 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate are both personal bests. ONE MORE CHANCE e NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to student-athletes who participated in spring sports who did not complete their season because of the coronavirus pandemic. e men's golf team's two seniors, Alex Schaake and Benton Weinberg, are looking forward to their return to campus next fall. ON FIRE AT FIGHTING IRISH CLASSIC e Hawkeyes completed their best finish of the season at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic, finishing in third place at 3-over-par (855) in October. Iowa finished ahead of Arizona State, which was ranked third nationally at the time, Iowa State, and three Big Ten opponents (Rutgers, Michigan, and Michigan State). ree Hawkeyes finished in the top 25: Schaake (tie-13), Leal Montero (tie-23), and McClear (tie-23). Leal Montero's third round 66 tied for the fih-lowest 18-hole round in program history. McClear fired a 67 during his second round, which is tied for the sixth-lowest 18-hole total in program history. BIG TEN BATTLES Iowa went 3-1 at the 2020 Big Ten Match Play Championships. e eighth-seeded Hawkeyes defeated second-seeded Purdue, fih-seeded Michigan State, and ninth-seeded Michigan. In the final round against the Boilermakers, Iowa trailed in five of six matches at the turn, but turned it around on the back nine. Leal Montero and Schaake notched victories, while Rowe birdied three of his final five holes to force a draw and help clinch a victory for Iowa via tiebreaker. Senior leadership was key for the Hawkeyes as both Schaake and Weinberg went 3-1-0 in their individual matches.
