43 T he University of Iowa men's gymnastics team, ranked No. 9 in the country, finished its 2020 home season with a victory over Minnesota (Feb. 1) and a tie against Illinois (March 1). SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS Senior Mitch Mandozzi competed in every meet this season. Mandozzi finished with career-bests on pommel horse (12.800), vault (14.600), parallel bars (13.750), and high bar (13.800). He qualified for the U.S. Championships in 2019. Mandozzi's 23rd-place finish at the U.S. Championships (61.750) included a 10th place finish on parallel bars (13.500) and 12th- place finishes on floor (12.900) and vault (13.800). Senior Nick Merryman finishes with career-bests on floor (12.750), pommel horse (14.200), rings (13.700), vault (12.500), parallel bars (13.950), high bar (13.950), and all-around (77.300). Senior Brandon Wong finishes with career-bests on floor (13.750), rings (13.900) and vault (14.100). RANKINGS e Hawkeyes ended the season ranked sixth on floor, sixth on vault, sixth on high bar, seventh on parallel bars, ninth on pommel horse and10th on rings. HAWKEYES IN THE ALL-AROUND RANKINGS Junior Bennet Huang ended the season ranked fourth in the NCAA. He had a season-high all-around score of 81.300 and an average score of 80.121. Evan Davis ended the season ranked eighth in the NCAA. Davis had a season-high score of 81.950 and an average score of 79.950 in the all-around. WINTER CUP RECAP Huang competed for the Hawkeyes in the preliminary round at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 20. Huang ranked 27th overall aer earning an all-around score of 77.900. He tied for 16th on floor (13.750), 34th on pommel horse (12.200), 33rd on rings (12.200), tied for 23rd on vault (13.700), 21st on parallel bars (13.100), and 17th on high bar (12.950). B1G COMPETITION e Hawkeyes fell to No. 4 Ohio State (407.650- 402.800) and defeated No. 22 Northern Illinois (325.850) on March 7. Junior Kulani Taylor won on floor (14.200) and Huang won the all-around with a season-best score of 81.200. e Hawkeyes tied No. 6 Illinois (403.050) in Carver- Hawkeye Arena on March 1. Huang won the all- around (81.300) and high bar (13.850) with career-best performances. Mandozzi won vault (14.400). e Hawkeyes won their home debut (400.000) against No. 10 Minnesota (397.600) and No. 19 Illinois- Chicago (355.600) on Feb. 1. Davis won the rings event (13.500) and tied his career-best score. Huang won the all-around with 81.050. e Hawkeyes traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, on Jan. 26 to face the Huskers. Nebraska won the meet with a score of 409.850, Iowa scored 406.950. Davis crushed four career-best scores on the floor (14.400), rings (13.500), parallel bars (13.650) and high bar (13.750). Mandozzi won the vault event and had a career-high score of 14.600; Wong won on rings with a score of 13.800. FRESH FACES e Hawkeyes add four new faces to their roster for the 2020 season — Noah Adams, Reuven Anderson, Amari Sewell and Carter Tope. Adams, a native from Diamondale, Michigan, was a two-time national qualifier. He finished second at state in the all-around in 2018 and fih place all-around in 2019. Anderson, from Minneapolis, was second place at state in rings in 2018 and first place in rings at state in 2019 as well as the 2018 and 2019 regional champion in rings. Sewell a Landover, Maryland native, is a Junior Olympic Nationals competitor, finishing 11th in the all-around. Tope, a native of Urbandale, Iowa, was a four-time national qualifier and is a three-time all-around state champion. RETURNING ALL-AMERICAN Stewart Brown earned All-American honors on the parallel bars. Brown posted a 13.800 to place seventh at the 2019 NCAA championships.
