41 W ith extra time on her hands, one University of Iowa GymHawk has taken the initiative to do something positive while in quarantine and away from gymnastics. Sophomore Allie Gilchrist has made a statement on social media displaying her skills as she tries her hand other sports. With facilities and the gymnasium closed, it has been difficult for student-athletes to exercise. "Working out at home is a lot different than at the gym," Gilchrist said. "We don't have the same equipment, but I'm trying to move my body in some way every day. e hardest part is not being with my teammates; it's easier to workout with them surrounding me." e change of pace means that workouts now consist of watching YouTube video circuits, but she's taking the extra time to teach herself "new tricks." When Allie's sister brought home a hurdle to practice for her track team, it presented a new idea. She wanted to try different sports and see if she was good at any of them while she filmed herself trying. With limited equipment, Gilchrist couldn't get a true verdict on her track skills, so she added a second hurdle — her sister. She cleared both. Aer trying hurdles, she got another idea. "It made me wonder if I could still play any other sports, so I decided to give them a try," Gilchrist said. Up for a challenge, Gilchrist threw in an extra element that she isn't used to. She was going to try sports that included more hand-eye coordination. "Gymnastics doesn't involve a lot of hand-eye coordination, so any of the ball sports are a challenge," Gilchrist explained. "My parents and sister make fun of my throwing form and the fact I flinch when I catch a ball." is led to Allie trying basketball, where she successfully made a basket. She then moved to tennis, where she got an ace on her first serve. e most recent sport Gilchrist has tried is golf. It is also the one she looked forward to most. "I know it's a sport I can play for the rest of my life when I'm done competing in gymnastics." Gilchrist said.
