STAYING GREEN Boulder Branch Takes Sustainability to a Whole New Level Alpine Bank's newest banking location in Boulder showcases its commitment to environmental sustainability. While the bank expects cutting edge LEED Gold certication by the end of 2019 and strict PACE certication from Boulder County in 2020, it has also created a comfortable, inviting place for customers as well as community gatherings. "Pursuing LEED Gold certication was a primary goal in building our new Boulder branch," said Alpine Bank Boulder Regional President Chris Maughan. "Creating this energy-ecient workspace is something our employees and our customers want and is in complete alignment with our Green Team initiatives throughout the bank's footprint." In attaining LEED Gold under its most stringent new Version 4 green building requirements, the Boulder location surpasses the local building code, which is among the most rigorous anywhere. Not only are energy-conserving features designed into it, but a solar array is generating an estimated 50%-60% of the building's energy needs, according to Steve Loppnow, senior sustainability manager in the Built Technology group, WSP Engineering. Among the green building features: • 21.6 kWh rooftop solar array • Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station • LED lighting & natural daylighting design • Low-ow toilets • High eciency Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC • Integrated Composting & Recycling • Interior bike storage • Exterior bike parking • Adjacent public transit stop Alpine Bank Boulder expects to receive local environmental certication from Boulder County's Partners for a Clean Environment (PACE) next year upon completion of the detailed process which measures attainment of strict standards for energy, waste, water and transportation. The bank building site required extensive remediation of the former gas station location, including removal of contaminated soil (browneld site). "This building goes well above and beyond code requirements," Loppnow said. "The future of sustainability in buildings is toward electrication and decarbonization. The ideal is to produce power on site and be able to charge vehicles on site. The Boulder branch is a great rst step towards this future."
