While ASU improved by just four wins overall from 2017, and five games in Conference play, the Sun Devils showed plenty of promise for the future. Three of the league victories were against teams ranked in the top 15 in the country. Arizona State returns nine letterwinners and most of its starters, enough to continue to build on last year's successes. STRENGTHS • ASU brings back most of last season's team, including five seniors on the roster and four student-athletes that started at least 23 matches. Three of its top-four four scorers are back, including senior Ivana Jeremic (pictured), and juniors Claire Kovensky and Megan Beedie. • The Sun Devils add a trio of transfers that should give the team an immediate boost. Senior Jada Burse comes to ASU after two All-Big 12 seasons at Kansas. Coming off her best year, she led the team in kills (3.46) and points per set (3.46). Sophomore Noa Miller, a setter, and junior Andrea Mitrovic both come with impressive Division I playing credentials. • Beedie, who ranked in the top five in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage last year, and Mitrovic spent the summer training with the Canadian National Team, and both traveled to international tournaments, including Beedie going to the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. • Senior Nicole Petersen leads a corp of three setters. She recorded the highest assists average among the regulars and was the team's total assists leader. CONCERNS • The Sun Devils graduated Alyse Forde who was a difference maker on the team. In her one season, she recorded the ninth-best kills average (3.70) in the Pac-12 and was the team's leading point scorer by a large margin. But with the transfers joining the team, as well as Jeremic, Kovensky and Beedie returning, ASU should be able to make up the void. • Nine newcomers join the team, including six freshmen. The challenge for the coaching staff, which also has a new member, is bringing the Sun Devils together as a cohesive unit quickly, especially with the rigors of league play looming. TOMASEVIC'S CAREER RECORD Year School Overall Conference Postseason 2017-18 Arizona State 24-40 (.375) 5-35 (.125) 0-0 (.000) Career totals (2 years) 24-40 (.375) 5-35 (.125) 0-0 (.000) HEAD COACH SANJA TOMASEVIC • In first season as head coach, guided four Pac-12 All-Academic honorees and an All-Pac-12 honorable mention for Oluoma Okaro. • Named the program's eighth head coach in team history on Dec. 21, 2016 after serving as interim head coach for ASU's indoor program. • Prior to arriving in Tempe, spent two years at Miami (Fla.), where she helped the Hurricanes reach back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. • A former Pac-10 Player of the year, was a two-time All-American leading Washington to a national championship in 2005. • Played eight years of professional volleyball overseas.
