STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Each month, the UW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) selects its ���Student-Athletes of the Month.��� These student-athletes are nominated by their coaches and academic advisors based on the following criteria: ��� Be academically eligible and in good academic standing ��� Have obtained an outstanding achievement or recognition in academics ��� Make a significant contribution to their respective team ��� Be actively engaged in community service SAAC members then vote on the winners at the first SAAC meeting of each month. The goal is to have each sport represented throughout the year. At the end of the year, all of the ���Student-Athletes of the Month��� become the nominations for the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year awards, which is awarded at the Buckinghams. DORCAS AKINNIYI WOMEN���S TRACK & FIELD Akinniyi, a senior from Carollton, Texas, is majoring in Psychology with a certificate in Integrated Liberal Studies and holds a 3.0-plus cumulative gradepoint average. Her eligibility for the indoor season is exhausted, but she will compete for UW during the outdoor season. During the 2012 indoor season she was the NCAA runner-up in the pentathlon and she won the pentathlon at the Big Ten championships for the thirdstraight year. Akinniyi is president of SAESO and has been actively involved with the group throughout her time at UW. She was instrumental in hosting this year���s Party for Parties event. 28 �� VARSITY FEB R UA RY 14, 2013 MORGAN PAIGE WOMEN���S BASKETBALL Paige is a junior from Marion, Iowa, and is a Life Science Communications major. She has not only carried above a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, but she also leads the women���s basketball team team in scoring (17 ppg) and is one of its best free throw shooters (81.5 percent). She is described by coaches and staff as ���beyond reliable and extremely dependable.��� SCOTT LIEGEL WRESTLING Liegel is a redshirt junior from Spring Green, Wis., majoring in Kinesiology with a 3.8-plus cumulative gradepoint average. He plans on attending medical school after completing his degree at UW. Liegel earned Academic All-Big Ten honors last year and had one of the department���s top GPAs last semester. He is ranked in the top 20 in the country at 174 lbs. On top of his work on the mat and in the classroom, he has put a lot of time toward community service and is a big reason why the wrestling team boasted one of the highest community service hours totals and GPAs ever in a semester.
