2019 COLORADO CAPITAL CONFERENCE QUICKLY APPROACHES During June 5-7, 2019, 100 Coloradans from all walks of life, from all corners of our state — both urban and rural — will attend the Colorado Capital Conference in Washington, D.C. Co-hosted by senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Michael Bennet (D-CO), this bipartisan conference provides attendees key insights into how the U.S. government works as well as a chance to hear from and interact with our nation’s leaders. Gino Campana, past participant and owner/founder of Bellisimo, Inc. located in Fort Collins, summed up the experience best. “This conference was so much more than I expected. I was able to network with business leaders from across Colorado, and interact with political leaders from across the nation. The agenda was packed with high profile speakers from both sides of the political aisle, and we were given the chance to ask them candid, earnest questions in a personal setting. It was obvious that our two U.S. senators, Senator Bennet and Senator Gardner, work well together despite their differences to provide this unique opportunity to Coloradans year-after-year.” Participants are responsible for their own airfare and hotel accommodations (hotel block and room rate offered), plus a non-refundable registration fee of $375, which covers the cost of most meals. A total of 12 student scholarships are available to Colorado Capital Conference partnering universities: Colorado Mesa University, University of Colorado and Colorado State University. The application closes March 22, 2019. Attendees will be notified of their selection no later than April 12. Questions? The invitation was appreciated but after research and careful consideration CMU decided to stay in the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Last fall, the Board of Trustees formally weighed the benefits and drawbacks of pursuing DI status and decided DII athletics better aligns with CMU’s values of putting the student in student-athlete first. There is also a financial case for maintaining DII status. Applying to DI costs nearly $2 million dollars, the annual fee is $125,000 and the cash fee for leaving the RMAC is $100,000. These are just the initial costs and to compete at the DI level would mean increasing funding for athletics by at least $7 to $10 million. CMU is open to new challenges when doing so benefits the people the institution’s mission was established to serve but at this time will remain a proud DII RMAC powerhouse. •
