The University of Tulsa   Business Magazine Letter from the Chair Collins College of Business Winter 2013 The University of Tulsa Business Magazine is published by The University of Tulsa Collins College of Business, 800 S. Tucker Drive, Tulsa, OK 74104-9700. The University of Tulsa Steadman Upham, President A. Gale Sullenberger, Dean, Collins College of Business Collins College of Business Mission Statement Our mission, through creating and disseminating knowledge, is to educate and mentor business and healthcare professionals for leadership roles in the international arena. The University of Tulsa Mission The University of Tulsa is a private, independent, doctoral-degree-granting institution whose mission reflects these core values: excellence in scholarship, dedication to free inquiry, integrity of character and commitment to humanity. The University achieves its mission by educating men and women of diverse backgrounds and cultures to become literate in the sciences, humanities and arts; think critically, and write and speak clearly; succeed in their professions and careers; behave ethically in all aspects of their lives; welcome the responsibility of citizenship and service in a changing world; and acquire the skills and appetite for lifelong learning. Jayne Gilsinger (MBA '87) Senior Vice President, Planning and Development, PennWell Corporation When I meet new people and they find out I graduated from The University of Tulsa, they often give me a certain look. You know the look: It's a mixture of admiration and respect. I've been lucky enough to get the look in Texas, Kansas and other states after my alma mater is revealed. Indeed, the reputation of excellence at TU and the Collins College of Business has traveled far beyond the city's limits and the state's lines. TU may not have a huge student body, but it is certainly making a big name for itself in terms of academic rigor, scholarship opportunities and career preparation. For these reasons, I'm thrilled to begin my tenure as the new chair of the Executive Advisory Board at the Collins College of Business. It is extremely rewarding to be serving in this capacity because I know how receptive the college is to the input of its advisory board, which is composed of business leaders and decision makers from a variety of industries. The board serves as the conduit between the business world and academia, providing recommendations for the college to develop the best possible business graduates who are ready to contribute to their organizations the day they are hired. A good example of the college implementing a recommendation from the Executive Advisory Board involves the accounting program. Recognizing the challenges of testing for the CPA, the EAB suggested that the college institute a Master of Accountancy program to prepare students for the stringent CPA exams. As an accounting graduate who has experienced the rigors of testing for the CPA, I certainly appreciate any efforts to make obtaining the CPA a little more achievable. The new Master of Accountancy is an excellent avenue for TU students to attain CPA compliance as well as a graduate degree. Providing guidance to a college that I attended as a student 30 years ago is certainly humbling, and I'm privileged to have this opportunity. In closing, I would like to leave you with this thought: You are one of the college's most valuable resources. As a member of the business community, your ideas can help us develop graduates who can best serve today's businesses. We welcome your knowledge of your organization and industry.
