STUDENTS in the University of Virginia School
of Medicine's Class of 2022 received their official
welcome to the profession of medicine on August
10 as they were each presented with a personally
embroidered white coat at the 2018 White Coat
Ceremony and Convocation at Old Cabell Hall. The
School's Class of 1965 endows the annual ceremony,
making it possible for all students to receive their
first white coat at no cost to them.
The event welcomed 156 students in the Class
of 2022, including four legacy students who have
a parent or sibling associated with the School of
Medicine. The ceremony was attended by students,
family members and School of Medicine faculty.
Mulholland Society President Brie Gerry, SMD
'19, shared advice with incoming students during
the ceremony. "Wear your white coat with pride and
confidence, even if you have no idea what you are
doing, because patients will look to you as if you
know what you are doing," she said.
Speakers also included School of Medicine Dean
David S. Wilkes, MD and Barry Collins, executive
director of the UVA Medical Alumni Association.
The annual ceremony is one of more than 50
events planned each year by the UVA Medical
Alumni Association for students, housestaff, faculty
and alumni.
