The Sun Devils welcome back nine returnees, including junior starting setter Nicole Petersen. In addition, two high-profile transfers join the squad in senior Alyse Ford, a former USC Trojan, and sophomore Claire Kovensky, formerly of Grand Canyon, both of which bring impressive resumes to help ASU compete in league play. STRENGTHS • Junior Nicole Petersen returns to direct the ASU offense. She is among the young Pac-12 setter corps returning from last season that figured among the best in the league. Petersen was sixth in assists per set, a top-10 list that featured freshmen and sophomores in the top seven. • Junior Ivana Jeremic returns as the team's top scorer, ranking third in points per set and kills per set. She was second on the team in aces. • Returning senior starters middle blocker Carmen Unzue and outside hitter Peyton Grahovac also return to lead ASU to a turnaround this season. Unzue was the team's top blocker at the net while Grahovac was one of four players last year to average over 2.02 points per set, providing a threat in kills and blocking. • Looking to give Arizona State an immediate boost are transfers senior Alyse Ford and sophomore Claire Kovensky. Ford experienced success while at USC, which finished tied for second in the Pac-12 last season and advanced to the fourth round of the NCAA Tournament. She was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 as a freshman and sophomore. Kovensky was the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the year, averaging 3.28 kps and 2.86 dps, also adding 39 blocks. CONCERNS • ASU will have to contend with the loss of Oluoma Okaro who carried the Sun Devils with a kills average of 4.33 and scoring average of nearly 5.0 pps, and was a honorable mention All-Pac-12. • Tomasevic is facing a challenge she has not seen before as a second-year head coach to get the team to build on last year's tough lessons and build confidence in order to see improvements. TOMASEVIC'S CAREER RECORD Year School Overall Conference Postseason 2017 Arizona State 10-22 (.313) 0-20 (.000) 0-0 (.000) Career totals (1 year) 10-22 (.313) 0-20 (.000) 0-0 (.000) HEAD COACH SANJA TOMASEVIC • In first season as head coach, guided four Pac-12 All-Academic honorees and an All-Pac-12 honorable mention for Oluoma Okaro. • Named the program's eighth head coach in team history on Dec. 21, 2016 after serving as interim head coach for ASU's indoor program. • Prior to arriving in Tempe, spent two years at Miami (Fla.), where she helped the Hurricanes reach back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. • A former Pac-10 Player of the year, played eight years professionally and won three league championships, including back-to-back Greek titles with Panathinaikos in 2009 and 2010.
