���I���m very encouraged,������ said Davis, who
watched his undermanned squad endure
some real growing pains last season while
competing shorthanded. But that���s all in
the rearview mirror.
���We���ve got 32 guys,������ he said, ���who have
completely bought into what we���re doing.������
This is not to imply that the Badgers are
where they need to be.
But they���re headed in the right direction.
���We���re not a great team, we���re a good
team right now,������ Davis said. ���But the guys
are doing a lot of detail work and doing all
the small things right. It has given us a better chance to win.������
The current resurgence in Wisconsin
wrestling can be traced to a number of
things.
���Part of it has to do with how last year
went and not wanting to repeat that,������ Medbery said. ���So everybody worked really hard
during the off-season and over the summer.
���There���s also the confidence that we���re
gaining from big wins over Nebraska and
Michigan State. Everybody is doing the
right things and putting the right time into
wrestling.������
When asked to expand upon Davis��� commandment to doing all the little things, he
said, ���It���s about making sure you���re not
cutting any corners and paying attention to
the details.������
Medbery has been doing just that in
posting a 6-0 record in dual meets, which
has elevated him to No. 10 in the InterMat
rankings at heavyweight. He is the nation���s
lone freshman to be ranked in the top 25.
���For a heavyweight, he moves like a lightweight guy,������ Davis said. ���He can penetrate.
He can ride really well. He understands
the sport at a very high level. Most heavyweights can���t move like he can.������
In breaking down his approach, Medbery
said, ���If I can be quick and get to my shots,
it gives me an advantage over some of the
