UW enters the 2018 season with a No. 4 ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Coaches Poll. The Huskies had their ninth 50-win season in 2017 and return over 70% of its runs scored from the 2017 WCWS team that ranked 18th in the nation in offense. That group includes Taylor Van Zee, Sis Bates, and Kelly Burdick, all of whom hit over .330 last year. Julia DePonte and Kirstyn Thomas, who hit seven and eight homers, respectively, are also back to bolster the offense. Trysten Melhart, who went 19-for-20 on stolen bases last season, will pair with Burdick as part of a dangerous outfield that will also include Maggie Gallagher, Kaija Gibson, and Amirah Milloy. Rutgers transfer and NFCA Freshman of the Year finalist Taryn Atlee joins the Huskies this year as a part of the infield. Atlee is one of six newcomers, along with hitters Nawai Kaupe, Morgan Allen, Emma Helm, and Noelle Hee and pitcher Gabbie Plain. Brittany Werre and Rachel Ogasawara will be an important part of the team as well. Werre hit .364 last season, while Ogasawara will provide defensive strength at catcher while also bringing her career .300 batting average to the offense.
