TEAM OUTLOOK The Cougars had a breakthrough season in 2016, making its !rst trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2009. WSU went on to also win its !rst postseason match in 15 years, after tying for !fth place in the Pac-12 while recording the most number of league wins since 2002. Washington State returns the majority of its squad from a season ago, including four starters. However, Jen Greeny's Cougs will be without its stalwart of four years and three-time All-Pac-12 Kyra Holt. STRENGTHS » Washington State was the third-best blocking team in the country and two of those reasons are back for 2017. Junior outside hitter Taylor Mims (pictured) and classmate middle blocker Claire Martin were sixth and 16th, respectively, in NCAA Division I in blocks per set as sophomores. » Senior outside hitter Casey Schoenlein was the only other Coug to have over 100 blocks on the season and returns to make the defense at the net an even bigger force in 2017. » Junior outside hitter McKenna Woodford had a stellar second season after posting a strong rookie campaign. Woodford put together another solid season as the second option on attack behind Kyra Holt, posting the second-most kills and points per set. With two years playing alongside Holt, Woodford has the opportunity to take the lead role for the next two seasons. » The Cougs return a veteran at the setter position for 2017. Senior Nicole Rigoni split playing time directing the offense with Haley MacDonald and making an appearance in every match. She was second on the team in assists, averaging nearly 5.0 per game. » WSU is also pretty well set at the libero spot, welcoming back sophomore Alexis Dirige. She was seventh in the Pac-12 in digs per set. Backing her up is junior transfer Abby Phillips. » Four Cougs also played on collegiate national teams this summer to gain experience: Woodford (Thailand), Mims (Europe), Schoenlein (Minneapolis) and Urias (Mexico). CONCERNS » Kyra Holt was a game-changer for the Cougs from the moment she stepped on campus as a freshman !ve years ago. A well-rounded player that led the team in kills, points and aces, and second on the team in digs, !lling the void will be dif!cult for any one player to !ll. » Even with Holt, WSU ranked at or near the bottom in kills, assists, hitting percentage and digs. WSU will need to improve on those areas so as to avoid an over-reliance on the team's nationally-ranked net defense.
