19 T he University of Iowa men's basketball team finished its European Tour with a perfect record last month, notching wins in Ger- many, Switzerland, and Italy. e value of these trips goes beyond the exhibition games against international competition. In ad- dition to 10 extra team practices, the time off the court with teammates and friends — while experi- encing different cultures — is something that will not be forgotten. "is trip was more beneficial off the court than on the court," sophomore forward Tyler Cook said. "Spending 10 days in Europe helped us grow closer as a team while also seeing beautiful places. is trip helped us gel more than if we stayed in the states." As far as the time on the court, head coach Fran McCaffery said the team accomplished what it wanted in a lot of ways. "Everybody played, we played different combina- tions, we had phenomenal practice sessions, and we got opportunities for our incoming freshmen to contribute in a big way," said McCaffery. Four Hawkeyes averaged double figures in the four games. Freshman Luka Garza averaged a double- double (22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds), sophomore Isaiah Moss averaged 12.5 points, Cook aver- aged 12.3 points, and Ryan Kriener averaged 11.3 points. As a team, the Hawkeyes shot 48.6 percent from the field, out-rebounded their opponents by 18, and had a plus-5.8 turnover margin. Game One — Four Hawkeyes scored in double figures to help Iowa run past the German All-Stars, 99-65. e game was scheduled primarily for se- nior Dom Uhl. e native of Frankfurt, Germany, had seven points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block in his homecoming. Iowa outscored Germany squad 22-5 on the fast break and 51-21 over the final 20 minutes. Game Two — Six Hawkeyes scored in double figures in a 125-56 victory over the Swiss All-Stars. ir- teen of Iowa's 14 players who played netted four points or more, led by Garza's 24 and Kriener's 14. e Hawkeyes valued the ball on offense, commit- ting only 11 turnovers, while creating problems for the Swiss offense, forcing 33 turnovers. Game Four — Cook and Garza posted double- doubles to lead the Hawkeyes to an 88-49 triumph over the Vicenza All-Stars. e duo combined for 40 points on 18-of-23 shooting from the field (78.3 percent), while grabbing 24 rebounds and rejecting four shots. Iowa collected 18 steals, with the starting backcourt combining for eight thes. Jordan Bohannon and Moss were credited with a team-best four steals apiece.
