22 SWIMMING & DIVING UIC hosted the 2017 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Flames Natatorium and came away with its best finishes in head coach Tim Loeffler's tenure. The men captured third place with a score of 522 as the women also placed third for the program's best ever finish after scoring 417. Three individual event titles were claimed with Max Pohl winning the 200 fly (1:48.98) and Brianna Hines leading the field in the 500 free (4:49.22) and 1650 free (16:38.68). The Flames combined for 26 top-five finishes between the men's and women's teams, as Hines (400 IM), Lexi Joy (200 free) and Sean Scarry (3-meter dive) were the runners-up in their respective events, as Joy broke the UIC record in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.35 and Michael Tegeler set a new program best in the 200 back after finishing in 1:47.01. HINES CONTINUES TO REWRITE RECORDS With her name already in possession of UIC's top times in the 1000 free and 1650 free, Brianna Hines broke another pair of records during her junior campaign that were previously her own. Both records came at the Horizon League Championship. Hines swam the 500 free in 4:49.22, improving her and the Championship record time by .34 of a second, then turned out a time of 4:19.78 in the 400 IM, shedding three seconds off her previous time. In his third season at the helm of the men's and women's programs, Tim Loeffler was awarded for taking the Flames back to unprecedented heights as he was named the Horizon League Men's Swimming Coach of the Year. Tyler Pastore capped his career with the Flames by competing at the NCAA Zone C Championships for the fourth time. Pastore broke the qualifying standard for the 1-meter dive at the UIC Invitational with a score of 305.40 to earn a spot in the zone qualifiers. He recorded a 208.80 on the 1-meter board then notched a 242.25 on the 3-meter. Fellow diver Sean Scarry qualified in the 3-meter dive with a 330.83 at the UIC Invite and 331.28 against Boston College but was unable to compete.
