18 WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS ELITE MIC HONOR GOES TO NORTHERN Mikailla Northern was named the 2017 Midwest Independent Conference Athlete of the Year just one year after being named MIC Newcomer of the Year. During her sophomore campaign, she was named MIC Gymnast of the Week on three occasions and led the conference with top regional qualifying scores (RQS) in the all-around (39.140) and on bars (9.815). UIC served as host for the 2017 Midwest Independent Conference Championships at the UIC Pavilion, where the Flames turned out a 192.750 to finish in fourth place. Mikailla Northern earned MIC First Team All-Conference honors after she claimed UIC's top scores on every event and Serena Baker earned placement on the Second Team following a sixth-place finish on bars. NORTHERN MAKES SHOWING IN FAYETVILLE For the second-consecutive season, Mikailla Northern headed to NCAAs to compete in the Fayetteville Regional as an at-large all-arounder. During the competition, Northern produced a 9.825 on vault, 9.775 on floor, 9.750 on beam and 8.800 on bars for an all-around score of 38.150. UIC REACHES NOTABLE FEAT AT WMU The Flames collected their highest team total since March 14, 2014 when it posted a 195.175 for second place at Western Michigan's tri-meet with Ball State. The team additionally put together a season-high 48.975 on bars, aided by top performances from Mikailla Northern, Katie Snyder and Jenna Squillo, to win the event. Northern captured titles on bars and the all-around in addition to placing second on vault and floor.
