17 MEN'S GYMNASTICS The Flames hosted the 2017 Eastern Conference Athletic Conference Championships inside the UIC Pavilion and came out with a score of 384.550. In competing against William & Mary, Navy, Army and Springfield College, UIC was able to produce six top 10 performances. Christopher Root led the team with top scores in three events (rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar), as Steen Haugsted (floor), Keith Kohn (pommel horse) and Asad Jooma (vault) rounded out the group of team-bests. ROOT REPRESENTS AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP Co-captain Christopher Root qualified to compete as an individual at the NCAA Championship on parallel bars after producing a qualifying score of 13.675. On the campus of Army West Point, Root produced a score of 13.150 to finish competition in the preliminary round. Two Flames were awarded during the season for their team contributions by the ECAC. Christopher Root picked up his second-career honor from the ECAC after being named Specialist of the Week on Feb. 14 following a trio of second-place finishes at William & Mary on rings, parallel bars and high bar. Victor Bello earned the distinction of Rookie of the Week on March 14 after securing first place on vault with a personal-best score of 14.150. sted (floor), Keith Kohn (pommel horse) and Asad Jooma (vault) rounded out the group of team-bests. Keith Kohn qualified to compete for Team USA at the 2017 Maccabiah Games in Jerusalem. The Mundelein, Ill., native was one of just two Illinois gymnasts selected to represent Team USA, and was the first gymnast from UIC to compete for America in an international competition. UIC headed to the Western suburbs of Chicago to compete in the Midwest Open alongside collegiate club programs from Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. The meet proved to be successful as the Flames turned out a season-high score of 387.700 and notched top scores on the year on rings (68.200) and parallel bars (66.020).
